This piece was made with watercolor, acrylic, and oil paint on canvas- touched up over time with the different paints to enrich the color and textures. I think a very important aspect of this painting is the different directions of movement that are present. We have this empty canoe, that reminds me of the feeling of helplessness and confusion, that is being sucked further out into the water by a tsunami-sized wave. At the same time, it seems to be experiencing pull from behind, trying and failing to pull this empty canoe to safety, out of the path of this monster wave. I think this painting represents the idea that sometimes we all have to go through difficult experiences in life that we cannot avoid, even if we see it coming. All you can do it prepare and hope you make it out on the other side to either pick up the pieces or celebrate triumph against the odds. You can't stop life from moving just like you can't stop a wave from gathering and following through, you just have to ride it out.
