Medical Science in Mysticism

Updated: Jun 8, 2021

I'm sure many of you have heard of the concept of an "Aura", the field of energy that surrounds individuals based on their emotions as well as the energy they put out into the world, translated into words as a description of personality. In the past, I have mostly thought of auras and aura-reading as being on the same the level as palm reading, psychics, and other categories that sit on the fence between believable and low-level scams. Personally, I have always felt that, whether or not auras appear as faint circles of color and light emanating from people, humans put out an energy that reflects their current condition or intentions. I base this off of the most basic animal instincts of reading others, in terms of whether or not they may be a threat. Children, as well as animals, may be able to read people better than us adults, because they simply have not learned social niceties yet; young children read situations based on the instincts that all humans are born with, to let them know if danger is near, or if they are in the presence of a friend. Without much cultural context or programmed opinions, how else is a toddler to know who the bad men are? There has been a form of circumstantial evidence to support this light blanket of energy surrounding humans; you have probably even experienced it if you have ever been physically standing near someone who seemed kind of off, and thought later about how strange their energy seemed or what a bad feeling he or she may have given you.

Believe it or not, I was scrolling through the spiritual side of TikTok, and user @irisdaileyy had made a series of posts about the amazing emotional and mental benefits of "raising your vibrations". When she says "vibrations," she is referring to the electromagnetic pulses put out by our hearts, similar to the ones put out by our brains. I was shocked when she mentioned that our hearts actually put out more electromagnetic signals than our brains, which can make up an electric field around our bodies, spanning up to two feet. I decided to check her facts and verify these statements before I hopped on that idea train, and what I found was very cool.

The brain communicates to our body, to make sure our senses and intricate bodily systems are functioning correctly, using electrical signals pulsing through our nerves and neurons. The heart uses a similar process called cardio-electromagnetic communication, which puts out an amplitude that is 60 times stronger than the electromagnetic energy emitted by the brain (HeartMath, para2). Not only that, but did you know that the heart has magnetic properties? I'm not just talking about "you have a little iron in your blood" magnetic; the magnetic field originating from the heart is actually one hundred times more powerful than the magnetic field from the brain, and extends out up to three feet away from the body. This magnetic field is where pulses are detected in the concept of cardio-electromagnetic communication.

This is where I threw my conventional definition of the heart, and its functions, out of the window. As a child, you learn that you feel with your heart, but in any basic anatomy education, you are taught that the heart's function is to pump blood throughout the body, circulate oxygen, and other things of the like. Those children's' cartoons may have had the right idea about the heart's role in emotion.

The electromagnetic field coming from our hearts, surrounding our bodies, sends electrical pulses throughout the field; this not only serves to communicate within your body, but also extends out of the body, which is why we can sense things from another person such as mood or approachability. There have been studies done that have shown particular patterns in fluctuation with these pulses in relation to the current emotional state experienced by the subject (HeartMath para4). This cardio-electromagnetic force put out by the heart affects the entire body, as well as the cardio-electromagnetic field belonging to people and animals who are often in close proximity to you. The heart communicates these feelings and conditions to the brain, as well as throughout the rest of the physical body, through these electromagnetic pulses; this can stimulate or disrupt thought patterns and physiological systems throughout the body, depended on what you are feeling emotionally and how intensely you are feeling it. Actively working towards developing consistently positive energy from within, directly affects your mental health and physical health on a level not a lot of people realize. This also means that your strong moods, whether positive or negative, can affect the moods of the people around you via magnetic field interaction (HeartMath, para34).

On the psychological side, this could be a new avenue for treating psychological disorders that involve anxiety and depression. If one can learn to influence the heart in a way substantial enough that promotes positive thinking and stimulates productive physiological activity without the use of medication, but rather simple breath-work and lifestyle changes for example, the treatment for chronic mental conditions could potentially be revolutionized in a way that would probably change the mental illness statistics for the United States. Specific emotions cause specific cardio-frequencies, so the use of mindfulness techniques could help one focus on recognizing the positive in the now (Morales, 2020).

Below is a list of emotions and their corresponding cardio-electromagnetic pulse frequencies, or an emotional frequency scale; if you find that you are feeling down, try focusing on these emotions and activities that provoke these emotions from you, and see what happens!
